Through the Looking Glass
The Left can usually be found in a fantasy world where the government can solve all the world's problems. The Breck Girl, aka John Edwards, announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democrat nomination today and laid forth a grandiose plan to eliminate poverty in the USA. Unfortunately, most of his ideas will increase poverty, not reduce it. A few of his proposals include:
(1) Higher federal minimum wage - this will increase unemployment among unskilled workers and probably cause more outsourcing and hiring of illegal aliens.
(2) Reduced taxes for low-income workers - this is a good idea. I have always felt that people below a certain income level should not have to pay any taxes
(3) Universal health care - by this he means a federal takeover of the health care system and the result would be a disaster
(4) One million new housing vouchers for working families - this will give people an incentive to keep their earning low
I have a much better idea. Let's give school vouchers to all children enrolled in public schools that would pay for them to attend the private school of their choice. Of course, Edwards won't go for this, because it will alienate the all-powerful teachers' unions who have a hammerlock on the Democrat party.

You have some good points, Syl.
But I think it is the low-income people who aren't working at all, or very little, who are receiving most of the social services.
There are some people of modest means who are working and are not taking much in the way of government benefits. Those are the ones I would like to help.
