Planet of the Week: Mars

Here is a map of the red planet, drawn by the Italian astronomer Schiaparelli in the 19th century. Schiaparelli thought he saw a network of canals on the planet.


Then the American Astronomer Percival Lowell got in on the act and also claimed that he also saw canals. Lowell hypothesized that they were constructed by intelligent beings on the planet

Here is a photo taken by the Hubble space telescope. No canals, but there may have been water flowing on the planet at one time.
