LONDON—U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner landed in Europe and reasserted a traditional American role of dispenser of financial advice to the world, telling European governments to get their fiscal houses in order.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Here are the US federal receipts and outlays since Geithner became treasury secretary (billions of $):
2009 Q1 Receipts: 442.3 Outlays: 891.2 Deficit: 448.9
2009 Q2 Receipts: 598.8 Outlays: 903.7 Deficit: 304.9
2009 Q3 Receipts: 515.9 Outlays: 845.3 Deficit: 329.4
2009 Q4 Receipts: 487.8 Outlays: 875.8 Deficit: 388.1
2010 Q1 Receipts: 466.1 Outlays: 795.0 Deficit: 328.9
The tax-evader Geithner has no business telling anyone to get their fiscal house in order.
